How to become a UGC creator: what the work is and how it pays

Key takeaways

  • UGC creators are paid to make content, not to reach an audience. You do not need followers to start.
  • There are three kinds of work: classic UGC ads, account-based ("canvas") posting, and high-volume variations.
  • Pay comes as a fixed fee per video, per views (CPM), a monthly retainer, or a mix. Live median per video in our feed: $52.
  • Never pay to get a job, never buy the product first unless it is reimbursed in writing, and price usage rights separately.

What UGC actually is (and what it isn't)

User-generated content, in the commercial sense, is short video that looks like it was made by a normal customer — because it was made by a real person with a phone — but is commissioned and paid for by a brand. The brand then uses it: on its own TikTok or Instagram, on its product pages, in emails, and above all in paid ads, where native-looking video tends to beat polished studio work.

The key difference from influencer marketing is what the brand is buying. An influencer sells access to an audience; a UGC creator sells the content itself. That is why a UGC creator with 300 followers can out-earn an influencer with 30,000: the brand never needed your followers, it needed a video that converts.

The three kinds of UGC work

Most gigs you will see fall into one of three buckets. They need different skills and pay differently, so it helps to know which one you are applying to.

1. Classic UGC for ads and brand channels

You film, edit lightly and deliver files. The brand posts them or runs them as ads. You are paid per video or per package, and usage rights (how long and where the brand can use your face) are part of the price. This is the most common entry point and the one our feed has the most of.

2. Account-based posting (often called "canvas" or app accounts)

Mostly apps and consumer tech. You run a fresh TikTok or Instagram account dedicated to the product and post to it every day, following formats the brand gives you. Pay is usually a base per post plus a bonus tied to views. The account normally belongs to the brand, so ask in writing who owns it before you start.

3. High-volume variations

Brands testing ads want many small variations: ten hooks on the same body, the same script in three settings. Each piece pays less, but it is fast, repeatable and good for building a portfolio quickly.

How UGC pays: the four models, with live numbers

Rather than quote a range from a survey, here is what the paid gigs in our feed actually offer right now. Across 350 gigs that state a cash rate, the median offer is $150 and half of them sit between $50 and $445. The full breakdown lives on our live UGC rates page.

Fixed fee per video

The simplest model: a price per finished video, agreed up front. Live median in our feed: $52 per video. Extras such as additional hooks, raw footage or rush delivery should be priced on top, not thrown in.

Paid by views (CPM)

You earn per thousand views, usually on account-based campaigns. 165 gigs in our feed pay at least partly by views. Before saying yes, check three numbers: the rate per 1,000 views, the cap (the maximum a single video can earn) and the minimum a video must reach before it pays anything. A generous CPM with a low cap and a high minimum can be worth almost nothing.

Monthly retainer

A fixed monthly amount for an agreed number of videos or posts. Live median: $540 per month. Retainers are what turn UGC from side income into something you can plan around — divide the fee by the number of videos to compare it fairly with one-off offers.

Hybrid

A base fee plus a variable part: a views bonus, a commission on sales, or a bonus if your video becomes an ad. Treat only the base as guaranteed income. Ask whether bonuses are capped and how views or sales are tracked, and by whom.

Red flags: when to walk away

UGC attracts scammers precisely because beginners are eager to land a first job. These patterns should end the conversation:

  • You must buy the product first and "will be reimbursed later". Legitimate brands ship product or reimburse in writing before you spend anything.
  • Any upfront fee: for "training", "onboarding", "verification" or a starter kit. Real clients pay you, never the other way round.
  • Payment in crypto or gift cards, or a cheque for more than the agreed amount with a request to send back the difference.
  • Perpetual, worldwide usage rights for a small fee. Forever use of your face in paid ads is worth far more than a one-off post — see our free UGC contract template for sensible licence terms.
  • Pressure to move off-platform fast — to WhatsApp or Telegram, with urgency ("only 2 spots left, reply in 10 minutes") and no company email or website behind it.

Usage rights and contracts in one minute

Usage rights decide where, for how long and in which countries a brand can use your video. Organic posting on the brand's account is the baseline; paid ads, longer windows and "whitelisting" (ads run from your own handle) are each worth extra. Even a two-line email that states deliverables, fee, payment date and licence is far better than nothing. Our UGC contract template gives you all of it to copy and paste.

Creating from Europe — and in your own language

Most UGC advice assumes you are American and film in English. You don't have to. Brands launching in Spain, Germany, France or Italy need native speakers, and there is far less competition for a Spanish-language video than for an English one. Right now our feed has 120 gigs that are open to EU creators or written in a language other than English. Filter by language when you set up your profile and you'll see them first.

What actually moves your earnings

  • A portfolio that matches the gig. Brands hire the creator whose samples already look like the ad they want.
  • Reliability. On time, inside the brief, open to one round of changes. Repeat clients and retainers come from this, not from talent alone.
  • Speed of applying. Good gigs fill in hours. Alerts and a ready pitch beat a perfect pitch sent two days late.
  • Pricing the extras. Usage rights, hooks, raw footage and exclusivity are where beginners leave the most money on the table.

Put it into practice

  • Decide which kind of work you'll start with: classic UGC, account-based posting, or high-volume variations.
  • Open the live rates page and write down the median for your niche — that is your floor.
  • Save the red-flag list somewhere you'll see it before replying to any DM.
  • Copy the contract template and fill in your default terms once.
  • If you're in Spain, book a short call with a gestor before your first paid job.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need followers to become a UGC creator?

No. Brands pay for the video and the right to use it, not for your audience. Account-based gigs even ask you to start from a brand-new account.

How much do UGC creators earn per video?

It varies by niche, usage rights and deliverables. The live median per video across the paid gigs in our feed is $52; see the full breakdown on our UGC rates page.

Is UGC legit or a scam?

The work is legitimate and widely used by brands, but the space attracts scams. Never pay upfront fees, never buy the product without written reimbursement, and avoid payment in crypto or gift cards.

Can I do UGC in Spanish or another language?

Yes. Brands entering European markets need native-language creators, and there is less competition than in English. Our feed lists gigs by language and country.
